Travel Channel Special: Top 10 Florida Beaches

The Travel Channel hosts a 1-hour special on Florida, and its amazing-beaches. Florida, as a whole, boasts 3 sea shores – more than any other state. Other states with sea shores have access to no more than one. Florida contains 16 national wildlife refuges and 150 national parks!

Top 10 Rated Beaches:

#10 – Daytona Beach: known for its entertaining boardwalk, a history of racing that was the source of the reason you can still drive on the beach today, at a speed limit of 10 miles per hour for $5 per day. So you can drive & park right on the beach to camp out for the day, if you want.

#9 – Sanibel Island: 1 of over 100 barrier islands along the coast, known for having the best shells and the best crustaceans due to the unique seabed structure off the coast.

#8 – Panama City Beach: with a population of 35,000 residences turns into a party city during the month of March when 500,000 high school & college students flood the area and its hotels. Local businesses are accustomed to, and well prepared for, this tradition. They have organized events and games to occupy the wild bunch. The beach features almost 19,000 hotel rooms and a variety of clubs including the well known "Club La Vela", "Harpoon Harry’s" and "Spinnakers".

#7 – Sandspur Beach, Bahia Honda Key: the entire island is protected park land, quiet, secluded and pristine.

#6 – Smathers Beach, Key West: Key West only has a population of 24,000 but is year round populated with tourists coming to see the southern most point in the Unites States. It is only 90 miles north of Cuba, making it closer to Havana than Miami. It is the home of the Hemmingway Estate and Maloy Square, famous for its sunsets, and Duval Street lined with bars know for the nightly “Duval Crawl”. The beach itself is man-made, built in 1961 with sand imported from the Bahamas.

#5 – Clearwater Beach, near St. Petersburg: hosting more than 1.5 million tourists a year, known best for its soft white sand and for being a boater’s paradise.

#4 – Lovers Key Beach, near Ft. Meyers: Lovers Key is a state park with 3 miles of beach including canoeing, bike paths and romantic walkways. It is known for being very secluded, often a couple will not see anyone else there & have the beach to themselves.

#3 – Palm Beach: actually an island 14 miles long. During the "snowbird season" has the highest concentration of wealth in the world with such prestigious destinations as The Breakers Hotel and excellent shopping.

#2 – Siesta Key Beach, near Sarasota: the sand is 99% pure quartz, the world’s finest and purest sand often attracting individuals who enjoy creating sand sculptures and competing with other sculptures.
